Flaneur Magazine 08, TAIPEI
Berlin-based Flaneur magazine celebrates the release of their latest issue, Taipei with a 20.5 hour launch party at Haus Der Kulturen.
The program included; Stargazing on the roof, an Instagram striptease by a performance artist Betty Apple as well as various talks, workshops, and a reading corner. The launch party for the 8th issue of a Berlin-based Flaneur magazine filled Hause Der Kulturen with a range of inspiring and entertaining activities.
A little bit about history of this Berlin-based magazine. I chatted with a girl who was selling the latest issue at the launch party, and asked her about what she does and what her role is. She said she’s a project owner, but also takes on a variety of responsibilities that come up. In the case of the launch party, she was still present, energetic and committed to doing the sales although it was nearly midnight. The team at Flaneur is really small, but that does not stop them from consistently creating high-quality content. The art direction for the magazine is done by Berlin’s best Studio Yukiko, a visual practice led by Johannes Conrad and Michelle Phillips.
Flaneur magazine focuses each issue on a certain street in a different country each time. After setting the destination, they let the selected road lead the way and shape the content that comes out of it. This time, they focused on the loud, colourful Wanda road in Taipei, loaded with culture. Incredibly, Flaneur Issue 8 managed to capture the feeling of this with the visual style, and the complexity and the amount of culture with detailed content that they had written. This magazine is a result of collaboration of artists, journalists and most importantly, people and their stories collected at the Kangding/Wanda Road.
And how can we not talk about the cover?
Taking visual inspiration from Taiwanese newspapers, Studio Yukiko’s Johannes Conrad and Michelle Phillips have organised every piece of information into boxes. Outlined in blue and red that clashes with the bubblegum pink background, they resemble the neon signs you’ll find at smattered all the way down Kangding/Wanda Road.
